Karma Yoga at 3HO Solstices
A Living Practice of Selfless Service, Community, and Spiritual Transformation
Karma Yoga is the ancient yogic discipline of selfless action — a practice that asks us to serve without expectation, to give without seeking recognition, and to act with full consciousness. At the heart of every 3HO Solstice Celebration, both Summer and Winter, Karma Yoga becomes the energetic thread that weaves individuals into community. It is not simply a logistical necessity; it is a transformational path that turns daily activity into sacred practice.
At Solstice, Karma Yoga invites each participant to shift from “me” to “we,” discovering the joy and freedom that arises when service becomes an offering rather than a duty. Through seva, the event becomes not something we attend, but something we create together.

The Deeper Meaning of Karma Yoga
In yogic philosophy, Karma Yoga is the yoga of action — the ability to move through the world with purpose, clarity, and neutrality. It teaches us to release attachment to outcomes and instead focus on the quality of our presence. When we serve from that place, even simple acts become meditation.
At Solstice, this approach takes tangible form. The meals we prepare for one another, the spaces we clean, the hands we extend to newcomers — each service becomes an expression of love, discipline, and awareness. This is why Karma Yoga is not an optional activity at Solstice but a central pillar of the experience. It cultivates humility, strengthens the collective field, and allows the gathering to unfold with harmony.
Karma Yoga is how we live the teachings of Kundalini Yoga in real time.
How Karma Yoga Shapes the Solstice Experience
Each Solstice is a temporary village — a living, breathing ecosystem that relies on the shared contribution of everyone present. When you register for Solstice, you select an area of service that becomes part of your daily rhythm. Kitchen service, hospitality, environmental care, youth support, program assistance, sound and technical support, translation, storytelling, healing spaces — each of these areas helps sustain the shared experience.
Every morning, Karma Yogis gather with their teams to connect, reflect, and align. These meetings set the tone for the day and ground the service in intention. Some participants serve a short shift each day; others choose the deeper immersion of the Service Exchange, offering more hours of support in exchange for a reduced registration rate and the opportunity to take on expanded responsibility.
The essence, however, is the same: everyone contributes, and through that shared effort, we create the environment in which deep practice becomes possible.
Why karma yoga is important for you
People often enter their Karma Yoga shift expecting a task — and end up having a spiritual experience.
This is the quiet power of seva.
Service asks us to let go of our preferences. It asks us to be patient, to listen, to collaborate. It asks us to connect with strangers with openness and warmth. These simple shifts open the heart in a way few practices can.
In this field of collective intention, service becomes a mirror.
We discover parts of ourselves we didn’t know were there.
Many participants say that the conversations during a shift, the friendships formed while cooking or setting up a space, or the grounding routine of daily service become some of the most meaningful moments of the entire Solstice.
Karma Yoga strengthens the threads of community and gives each person a sense of purpose and belonging. It is the practice that transforms Solstice from an event into a sangat — a spiritual family.

Service as Spiritual Action
Every Solstice attendee is a steward of the gathering. When someone offers their hands, they offer their consciousness. When a group prepares food with intention, nourishment becomes medicine.
The practice of Karma Yoga teaches that nothing is too small to be sacred.
Through selfless service:
- the ego softens,
- awareness expands,
- and the mind becomes quieter and steadier.
We begin to understand why the yogis taught that seva is one of the most direct paths to spiritual growth — because it aligns the heart, mind, and spirit through action.
Choosing Your Path of Service
Whether you are chopping vegetables, supporting sound in a workshop, caring for children, welcoming new arrivals, or tending to the spaces we share, your service is essential. The specific team you join is less important than the consciousness you bring to it. Every area of seva carries equal spiritual weight; every task holds the potential to awaken deeper inner stillness and connection.
Throughout both the Summer and Winter Solstice gatherings, Karma Yoga roles vary each year, evolving to meet the needs of the event and the gifts of the people who join. But the intention remains constant: to create a space where people can practice, grow, heal, and transform.
Choose Your Karma Yoga
Every Karma Yoga team is essential to the Solstice flow. Teams vary between Summer and Winter, but all support the heart of community service.
