The Land of Ram Das Puri
Guru Ram Das Puri: Where the Earth, the Breath, and the Spirit Meet
For more than fifty years, seekers from around the world have gathered on a sacred stretch of land in northern New Mexico to meditate, pray, and awaken. This place is Guru Ram Das Puri, the home of Summer Solstice Sadhana Celebration and a living field of spiritual practice. Long before tents rise and mantras fill the air, the land itself begins the teaching.
Located outside of Española, about thirty-five miles north of Santa Fe, Guru Ram Das Puri rests in the Jemez Mountains at nearly 7,000 feet above sea level. Because of this elevation, the land offers not only breathtaking beauty but also a rare clarity that supports deep inner work. From the moment you arrive, the air feels different. It is cleaner, lighter, and charged with a quiet presence that many experience as both grounding and expansive.

A Land Chosen for the Dharma
The story of Guru Ram Das Puri begins in 1977, when Siri Singh Sahib Yogi Bhajan searched for a permanent home for the Summer Solstice Sadhana. After reviewing many possible locations, this land revealed itself in an unexpected way. Though it appeared arid and snow-covered at the time, it carried a powerful, unmistakable vibration. According to the account later shared, the land was alive with a subtle spiritual presence, described as a gathering place of angels who support the work of transformation and service Where-Angels-Dare-to-Tread.
Most importantly, this land was chosen not for comfort, but for consciousness. From the beginning, Guru Ram Das Puri was meant to be a place where people would meet themselves honestly, supported by nature and guided by disciplined spiritual practice. Therefore, every Solstice builds upon decades of prayer, chanting, and collective intention that continue to shape the field today.
Surrounded by Nature, Held by Elevation
Guru Ram Das Puri is encircled for miles by forest, hills, and wide desert sky. Because the land sits high in the mountains, it creates a natural bowl of stillness. Sound carries gently. The horizon feels vast. Besides that, the elevation itself plays an important role in the Solstice experience.
At nearly 7,000 feet, the body must slow down, breathe consciously, and adapt. This adjustment encourages presence. As a result, many people find that meditation deepens more quickly here. The mind clears. The heart opens. The land quietly asks you to arrive fully.
Climate That Teaches Awareness
The high-desert climate of Guru Ram Das Puri is both beautiful and demanding. During the day, temperatures often reach the high 80s to low 90s Fahrenheit (28–35°C). The sun is strong at this altitude, so sun protection is essential. However, as evening approaches, the temperature drops rapidly. Nights and early mornings can be cool, often falling into the 40s and 50s Fahrenheit (15–20°C).
Because of these shifts, the climate becomes a teacher. You learn to dress in layers. You learn to listen to your body. You learn to stay hydrated, not only for physical balance but also to support emotional and energetic processing. Sudden rainstorms may pass through as well, reminding everyone of nature’s unpredictability and grace.
Clear Air, Clear Mind
One of the most immediate gifts of Guru Ram Das Puri is the air itself. Free from pollution and heavy moisture, each breath feels clean and direct. This clarity supports long hours of chanting, meditation, and early morning sadhana. Over time, many people notice that breathing becomes easier, deeper, and more conscious.
Because breath and mind are intimately connected, this environment naturally supports inner stillness. Therefore, practices that might feel challenging elsewhere often unfold with greater ease here.
A Subtle Vibration That Transforms
Beyond geography and climate, Guru Ram Das Puri carries a subtle vibration shaped by decades of spiritual discipline. For over half a century, people have risen before dawn on this land to meditate together. They have chanted sacred mantras, served one another, and faced personal transformation in community.
As a result, newcomers often feel something they cannot fully explain. Some describe a sense of being held. Others feel clarity, emotional release, or deep peace. While each experience is unique, the land consistently mirrors what is needed for growth.
This is not accidental. Spiritual practice leaves an imprint. When thousands of people commit to consciousness in the same place, year after year, the land remembers.

An Ashram-Connected Spiritual Experience
Summer Solstice at Guru Ram Das Puri is not a festival in the usual sense. It is an ashram-connected, community spiritual experience rooted in simplicity and service. Technology fades into the background. Nature becomes the rhythm. Daily life returns to essentials: waking, breathing, chanting, eating, resting, and serving.
Because of this simplicity, people often reconnect with parts of themselves long overlooked. Besides that, shared practice creates a powerful sense of unity that transcends background, language, and experience.
Returning, Again and Again
Many who come to Guru Ram Das Puri return year after year. They do so because something real happens here. The land challenges, supports, and refines. It strips away distraction and invites presence. Over time, it becomes a teacher in its own right.
Whether this is your first Summer Solstice or your fiftieth, Guru Ram Das Puri welcomes you into a living lineage of prayer and transformation. When you sit on this land, you join generations who have come before you—listening, breathing, and remembering who they are.
And long after the tents come down, the land remains, holding the vibration, waiting quietly for the next soul to arrive.
