Wearing White

Wearing White

It is common to see Kundalini Yoga teachers and practitioners wearing white, loose fitting clothing, ideally of natural fibers. But in a Western yoga world of spandex and leggings, why is this?

Kundalini Yoga is geared towards increasing sensitivity, enhancing bioelectricity, and strengthening the nervous system. Wearing white is another tool to strengthen your projection and conscious awareness.

As with any discipline, practitioners are free to choose what works for them, and leave the rest. There is no dogma, and there are no hard rules. But let’s explore why wearing white is common practice amongst Kundalini Yogis.

Anatomy of White

The first assumption is that wearing white, ideally from cotton, silk, wool, or natural fibers, expands and nurtures the aura. The traditional teaching was ‘if you’re having a bad day, take a cold shower and put on all white.’

White is what we see when all wavelengths of light are reflected at once.

Symbolically, wearing white is an invitation to deflect what’s going on outside of us and turn inside for answers and guidance. Literally, the pigment in the color white is reflective. This protects your aura and positions you to center your practice and power.

Ask any golden-milk-drinking, turmeric-loving yogi and they’ll agree that white is also hard to keep clean! Wearing white requires us to pay more attention to what we’re eating, where we’re sitting, and the general impact of our actions. In this way, the act of wearing it increases our self awareness.

Natural Fibers

Chemical dyes and synthetic fabrics can interfere with the magnetic field of the body and disrupt our natural flow of energy. While we may not be able to avoid this altogether, the choice to wear all-natural, neutral clothing in practice may be quite supportive. The natural fibers feel comfortable and allow the skin to breathe.

Do I Need to Wear White if I attend a Kundalini Yoga Class?

Of course not! Yoga can be practiced in any color and any style of clothing (so long as you can move in it!). If you are curious, you may like to experiment with wearing white and pay attention to how you feel.

At the core of the practice of Kundalini Yoga is awareness. Wearing white is an opportunity to explore your awareness and deepen your subtle observations. The experience is yours. Simply notice any changes.
