Service Exchange

3HO International’s Summer Solstice wouldn’t happen without Service Exchange participants. We are a community event generated by the people and for the people. The success of the event depends on each person’s dedication and commitment to doing seva (selfless service). One of the most exciting rewards of Solstice is the opportunity to co-create the event through daily participation at every level. Our interdependence creates a sense of intimacy that adds depth and meaning to everything we do at Solstice.

As a Solstice Service Exchange Team member your principal commitment is to make your service area successful. As a member of the team, you will generally serve approximately 5-6 hours a day in your service area but may serve more. In return, 3HO will offer you a discounted ticket to attend Summer Solstice.

Being accepted on a Service Exchange Team means that you will pay a reduced registration rate of $400. As a Service Exchange member, you will also have access to one-day of White Tantric Yoga® (if you choose). This program is being offered separately at our 2023 event and is a $230 value! Please note that it is not mandatory for service exchanges to remain present during White Tantric Yoga.

Service Exchange: Team Manager Opportunities

If you are a seasoned Solstice sevadar who’d like to be considered for an area manager position, we’d like to hear from you!

Managers should be practical and willing to give their time as leaders to accomplish the tasks required to keep the camp running. Ideal candidates will have extensive experience serving at Summer Solstice, ideally in the area where we have a need.

Service Area Managers are Service Exchange participants interested in taking their service experience to the next level.

You should be an accomplished Service Exchange participant who is interested in making a long-term commitment to Solstice. A Service Area Manager’s service commitment includes, but is not limited to:

  • Daily staff meetings
  • Preparation for Solstice throughout the year
  • Building your team of Service Exchange members and outlining your Karma Yoga needs
  • Managing your Service Exchange members and Karma Yogis at Solstice
  • Leading your Service Exchange members and Karma Yoga team in the daily meditation and check-in on site

A Service Area Manager’s time commitment varies more than a regular participant. A manager has to make the schedule and oversee their team, so their hours are not as regular. Expect to serve between eight and ten hours per day during the event.

APPLY TO SERVE AS SERVICE EXCHANGE MANAGER HERE.

Setting a friendly, inviting and calm atmosphere for participants as they arrive at the Solstice site is the most important function of the Registration Team. To create this requires a team that is able to stay composed and organized when registration becomes very busy. Our work is detail-oriented and requires patience and grace. You will serve Solstice participants by completing the check-in process on-line, handing out badges, and supporting in other ways that provide a great start to their Solstice experience. PEACE PRAYER DAY
The Peace Prayer Day team is responsible for setting up the Sacred Healing Walk and organizing the on-stage presentations, in coordination with Sound, Ground, and Programming teams. Team members must be able to serve camp with devotion and reverence, and handle physical exertion as well as large amounts of information. Clear communication and independent follow-through are necessary. This team is best suited towards helpful people who want to be in service to teachers, can multi-task and self-initiate, and make sure all programming runs gracefully and smoothly.

AUDIOVISUAL
We are seeking applicants who have technical audio/video experience and first consideration will be given to those souls who have previously attended the Summer Solstice. The sacred sound current is one of the most critical aspects of a successful Solstice. CHECK-IN / SCREENING TEAM
This team will be responsible for welcoming people into camp and screen registration status. Security is provided by an on-site sheriff.

FIRST AID
When you have 2,000+ people in a high desert environment for over a week, some of the people get boo-boos—whether dehydration, sunburn, cactus, fevers, or other physical challenges. Our First Aid team serves these challenges with a graceful, caring, and compassionate approach to healing. If you would like to serve in this way, we would love to have you on the team. Our First Aid area is staffed with clinical and support personnel. The medical/clinical staff must have active licenses as MD, DO, ND, or nurse from any state in the U.S. EMTs need a New Mexico license or they can obtain a temporary NM license ($135 from EMS Board, at your cost). Medical Staff can provide only first aid for patients under the license of our physician medical director. Any patients in need beyond first aid can be taken to the hospital, office, or clinic. Front Desk Staff: you will greet campers as they come in, have them fill out paperwork, and manage the flow of patients for the Medical Staff. Front desk duties also include: keeping paperwork organized, monitoring the atmosphere of the waiting room and act as a liaison with other staff regarding patients. Excellent communication skills, a calm, kind personality, organized mind and flexibility are essential for this position. Transportation Staff: Valid U.S. Drivers’ License required. Drivers will be on call for any medical emergencies to drive down the mountain with patients. Non-emergency situations also occur for First Aid functions. Drivers will be on call and carry a radio during their shifts. Transportation Staff will coordinate and execute set up and breakdown of the First Aid unit, with supervision. Greeters: greet campers as they enter the area in front of first aid, maintain area in front of first aid trailer including self-help station, electrolytes and water containers and guide campers to meet their needs. Greeters are very important because they are the first faces people see when they come to us. All First Aid Team members are required to attend set up and breakdown.

GREEN TEAM
As a member of the Green Team, you will work to facilitate the removal for all the recycling, trash and compost we make around camp. This is a fun area for those who are passionate about sustainability and educating camp members about the different trash options that are present at camp. If you like to do physical work and don’t mind getting a little dirty, this seva is for you.

SAINTS OF THE PORCELAIN BOWL
The primary responsibility of the Saints is the cleaning and maintenance of bathrooms and portables. This area was formerly a part of the Grounds Team. The Saints meet daily and share the task of keeping our bathrooms clean and tidy! Come with a great attitude and whistle while you work!

GROUNDS CREW
Grounds Crew helps with facility upkeep and maintenance. Grounds includes straightening up and maintaining showers, doing maintenance work such as replacing light bulbs, fixing leaky taps, securing classroom shelters in wind and rain situations, and helping to move tables and stages when needed. Working on the Grounds Crew means being energetically available and effective at accomplishing the tasks required to set up the camp and to keep the camp moving in a smooth and healthy way. We keep the basics of camp up and running so that our community can have a “grounded” experience. Grounds Crew requires a humble and serviceful attitude.

LUGGAGE
The Solstice Luggage Shuttle team has the privilege of welcoming participants to Solstice. We receive all gracefully, give them some basic direction, and deliver their bags to their campground or cabin. We are busy on the first arrival days and again as camp closes. In between, our workload slows. Making sure we are in contact with our team and responsibilities, we have time to enjoy solstice.

KITCHEN
Do you enjoy working in a fast-paced kitchen setting and preparing food? We have multiple Kitchen Service Exchange teams at Solstice, including: Dinner/Soup Prep; Beans and Rice Brigade; Breakfast Soup; Children’s Food; Clean-Up; Lunch Prep; Veggie Chopping; Greeters/Meal Distribution; and Yogi Tea.

TENT SET-UP
The Tent Set Up Crew provides an important welcoming presence to solstice participants. They will help any attendee set up their personal tent. They are also responsible for making sure 3HO rental tents are accurately and clearly labeled with their tent numbers. Each day people from the Tent Set Up Crew will check the 3HO tents for signs of damage or to fix any loose stakes etc. After any inclement weather Tent Set Up Crew should be available to help re-set up or fix 3HO rental tents and any personal tents. The team may also be asked to help breakdown and pack attendees’ tents.

SET-UP AND BREAK DOWN CREW
The Solstice Setup and Breakdown Crew is responsible for setting the intention for a blessed, healing, inspiring experience at Summer Solstice. We arrive early and stay late. We need strong souls who are comfortable with physical work. General tasks include unpacking storage, painting signs, a degree of skilled carpentry and plumbing work, helping in the kitchen, and cleaning. It is a good mix of physical, creative, hard, fun, work.

SOLSTICE YOUTH CAMP
Solstice is a family friendly environment and little people are everywhere. To give the children an experience of their own identity and to support the parents, we have a variety of programs for children, youth and teens. If you have experience working with these groups, this unique service opportunity is a wonderful option. It is the primary intention of Solstice Youth Camp to create an environment, a program, and a team that values children’s Solstice Sadhana experience. We’re looking for individuals who are physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually fit – who are able to take care of, not only themselves, but the children who are at Ram Das Puri. To do this requires a strong nervous system, a lot of flexibility and some sacrifice. The ability to communicate with parents, fellow team members and children is also essential. We prefer applicants who have attended at least one Summer Solstice, but if you have a lot of experience working with children, please apply.

MEDIA
The Photo/Film team’s commitment is to make your service area successful by providing inspirational, uplifting, quality images and video to 3HO International and the Global Community.

With a much smaller camp this year, 3HO is changing the format for all ages of children. We are rebooting and shifting this year and during this transition we ask for your patience while we slowly rebuild.

This year, 3HO will not be providing childcare and parents are responsible for their own children. We will provide a special shaded shelter & playground, a swimming pool and toys/games for children aged 3-12 as well as a separate child friendly menu.

There will be a certified lifeguard at the pool, but parents must not drop their children off at the pool, but be present with them.

We will have service exchange volunteers who can support parents and keep the toys and childrens shelter clean and organized.

Again, this year’s children’s facilities will be safe and fun – an opportunity for parents to spend time with other parents, children and supportive volunteers.

3HO is providing an environment for children to have fun with their friends and families, but we will not be providing childcare and parents are responsible for their own children.

We have in place the same policy as prior years, which is parents with children of an age that requires supervision (12 and under) can not sign up for a management or service exchange position, but instead can join the parents karma yoga team, to be with other families and support each other in caring for your children.
