Yogi Bhajan was a huge fan of people serving each other where needed. Most spiritual practices and humanitarians would agree. In fact, I bet you agree. I do! For a lot of us, it isn’t a question of, “Is it a good idea to volunteer time, volunteer money or volunteer energy?” It is, “Where can I fit that in my busy day?”
In my experience, once I started giving time and money to organizations or people I felt called to, it was given back to me tenfold. I didn’t think I had the time, money or energy to take away from my own “trying to make my life work.” But what I noticed was there WAS time. And the feeling of being involved in my community felt great. Being able to give was like a sign of my own wholeness.
What was most surprising was the money and resources that came together to support me. It has never felt like a thing I “have to do” that takes away from my life. It brightens my life and is a huge part of my work, personal, and spiritual practice.
Still not convinced?
How about trying this—make giving a part of your day. How about slowing it down a bit and see little parts of your day where you could be of service? Maybe it is really listening to a stranger talk in line at the grocery store. Maybe it is helping a neighbor carry their laundry in. Maybe it is keeping care packages for the homeless in your car.
You never know where an opportunity to give might pop up. I bet you will feel a change that brings you purpose, courage and connection.
I'll leave you with a favorite giving quote by Yogi Bhajan: “If you do not do seva—selfless service, you have just let your soul go hungry. Selfless service to others is the food of the soul.”
