40 Days, 40 Years, 40 Prayers

By Surjot Kaur

40 is a sacred number. It’s sacred to Jews, Christians, Muslims, Hindus, and the ancient wisdom traditions that celebrated the solstices and equinoxes. In Sumerian myth, Enki, the god of mischief, crafts, seawater, intelligence, and creation, claimed the number 40 as his sacred number.

Baseball teams allow 40 players. In football, talent scouts determine players’ skills by how fast they run the 40-yard dash. The number 40 surrounds us, supports us, and guides us through its wisdom of the cycles and sacred numbers of the Universe. In Kundalini Yoga and Meditation, completing 40 days of a particular practice helps us to break habits.

No doubt turning 40 years old is a big deal!

I am celebrating turning 40 years old by practicing a 40-day personal sadhana. I am practicing the “Meditation for Word Power,” and I am practicing “The Isht Sodhana Mantra Kriya.” I learned these two meditations from a Level 2 Kundalini Yoga Conscious Communication teacher training course. These two meditations appear in the chapter called, “Communicating with the Infinite: Prayer, Grace and the Flow of Spirit.” I chose these meditations because I wanted to learn to pray in a way that is always effective and powerful.

Each day, after meditating, I post my insights and prayerful words on my personal website. Each day I am committing to becoming a more prayerful yogi. These teachings in the level two course are really teaching me how to pray in a sophisticated, real way that is effective in helping me communicate with Infinity.

This is the way I am consciously celebrating my own lifecycle of 40 years on this planet. I am proclaiming to the Universe my devotion to practice, teach, share, and live the teachings of Kundalini Yoga. I am learning about the sophistication, the facets, the depth, and the divinity of my own consciousness. I am learning about the strength of my spirit and my determination to grow old as a woman of wisdom, a woman of consciousness, and a woman of love. A prayerful woman.

40 is a great number. I do not need to make a silly, wishful claim that 40 is the new 20. 40 is 40. It is a sacred number, and I am grateful to be a beautiful, blissful, bountiful woman who is turning 40 years old.

My body, this mind, and these internal organs may be turning 40 years old, but I feel that I have never been happier, healthier, or holier in all my life. My soul continues to connect to Infinity and the flow of spirit, which knows no age, time, or space.

Infinite gratitude and infinite smiles to all who continue to live, breathe, support, and learn in the healthy, happy, and holy lifestyle. May we continue to feel connected together in All That Is, together in our timelessness, together in celebrating all our collective beauty, bounty, and bliss! Sat Nam!
