Become a Lover of Peace by Using the Weapons of Kindness and Compassion

By Catalyst Yogi

“Now the question for every intelligent human being under this sun on the Earth is that if we want to survive, we have to learn to love peace. The tragedy is we have not yet learned to love each other. It's very difficult. We are afraid of each other.” -Yogi Bhajan

When we look out into the world today, to live peacefully can seem like a daunting task, yet the survival of the human species depends upon it. You may ask, “What can I possibly do to help bring peace into this chaotic world? I’m too small and the problems are too big.”

When you catch yourself in this kind of defeatist thinking, remind yourself that the Aquarian Age is coming and it will be a time of peace and harmony among all people. Yes, the story of our awakening will end well, but we each must first play our part in bringing in this new consciousness to the Earth.

Where do we start? The work of peace starts with the individual and then extends out to our personal relationships. Why is it is so difficult to bring harmony and love to all of our relationships? One word—ego! In order to transcend the ego we must first understand how it works.

The ego sees the other as either an ally or a threat to its existence. The ego tells you that you need to defend yourself from others, especially if they disagree with you. The ego tells you to shut down your heart to this perceived enemy. It’s the ego that fears the other. However, there is no “other,” there is only an “outer” you.

Your Soul is not afraid of the other—it only sees another aspect of itself—the “outer you.” One of the sutras of the Aquarian Age is recognize the other person is you, and in truth, there is no separation. There is no you and me—there is only we.

To escape from this illusionary game of separation we must first learn to NOT identify with our emotional state. Being in the presence of others can bring up high voltage emotions, especially if we have past life karma to work out. Conflict occurs when both parties identify with their emotional state, and it always takes two to slam dance.

The truth is that peace is our natural state and it is not at all contingent upon being in peaceful environments or with peaceful people. To leave your inner state of peace is a choice. Will you listen to your ego that thrives on conflict or will you remain inside? Can you keep your heart open when in the midst of an emotional storm? Can you not react to your ego when it screams for you to get on the defense and prove that you are right? Can you extend kindness to someone who is unkind to you?

It takes a vigilant self-awareness to get out of this trap of argumentation and division. It takes discipline to not become victimized by our emotions. The Aquarian Age demands that we stay in our hearts with one another through thick and thin. Lucky for us we have the powerful technology of Kundalini Yoga and Meditation to become more self-aware and heart-centered. As you become more aware of your inner emotional state and the workings of your own ego, you’ll feel less of a need to defend yourself.

In my experience, when I feel the emotions escalate, especially when discussing politics, best is to calmly say to my outer self, “We disagree on this matter and that’s okay. Let’s talk about something else.” The ego’s version of harmony and peace is that we have to agree on everything, and this isn’t true.

It’s time for each one of us to become a lover of peace. To be a lover of peace is to make the relationship to the other person more important than being right. To be a lover of peace is to make the heart more important than the opinions of mind. To be a lover of peace is to use the weapons of kindness and compassion to dismantle the defenses of the other. Remember that the ego cannot hold in the face of unconditional love pouring from your innocent heart to that of the other.
