Chanting Morning Call through the Chakras

Weaving the mantra Ek Ong Kaar Sat Naam Siree Wah-hay Guroo through the chakras while chanting Morning Call/Long Ek Ong Kaars—have you ever heard of this technique and wondered how to do it?

For many years, I have taught Morning Call/Long Ek Ong Kaars in Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training programs as well as in Naad Yoga workshops and personal sessions with students. From time to time, someone has asked about chanting the mantra through the chakras: How to do it? Should we do it? Did Yogi Bhajan teach it this way? While I had heard about this technique over the years, I had never been able to find any lecture or documentation where Yogi Bhajan had actually trained us to chant it this way. Honestly, I thought that someone had made it up.

Well, over the summer, I actually located the source where Yogi Bhajan specifically describes how to move the energy through the chakras. Prior to finding this documentation, my answer to students has been that they learn to chant the mantra properly with the appropriate application of body locks and the energy will move through the chakras regardless of any sort of visualization. (We can get hung up in our heads too much in meditation rather than just letting the mantra and technique work.) Even with this new information, I still believe this is true; you can simply chant the mantra correctly without the visualization to great effect. That being said, I’ve started applying this technique to my chanting and am really enjoying the whole new movement of energy from an already powerful meditation.

“Chant from the navel in a 2 1/2 breath cycle. Ek Ong Kaar – Sat Naam Siree – Wah-hay Guroo. Each sound vibrates and integrates a different chakra within the aura. Ek is very short, as when we split the atom, releasing a humongous amount of energy from the first chakra. Ong is vibrated from the second chakra, resonating through the nostrils to experience the conch of the third eye. Kaar is vibrated from the navel. Take another deep inhale and chant Sat Naam Siree. Sat is short, coming abruptly from the navel, pulling up the diaphragm. Naam is very long and resonates through the heart. Siree is the greatest of all powers, the Shakti, and is chanted with the last bit of breath. It is pulled from the navel and up through the neck lock. Then take a short breath and chant Wah-hay Guroo. Wah-hay and Guroo are released through the top of the head.

“Through this meditation you will master the power of prana, Pavan Siddhi, until the breath of life becomes your own. It will give you the power of Vac Siddhi, the power of speech. What you say with the breath shall happen. It is hard labor. Do this Jaap, repeating it again and again until you reach 1/10th of the day: 2 1/2 hours. By the way, you can chant Morning Call/Long Ek Ong Kaars at any time. It’s called ‘Morning Call’ in part because this was the first sadhana that Yogi Bhajan gave us way back when and, thus, we chanted it in the morning. But chant it any time. No limitations.
