Practice Tips for Newcomers from 3HO Staff

We asked our team what their advice would be to someone new to the kriyas, mantras, and meditations of Kundalini Yoga. Hope you find something helpful!

  • Remember to bring your focus back to the brow point when your mind starts to wander.
  • Keep chanting Sat on the inhale and Nam on the exhale as much as you can remember to do it – during exercises and in-between.
  • Watch how you feel in-between the exercises and after meditations when you sit in stillness.
  • Don’t worry about what other people are doing. Build your practice the way it makes sense for you, and the way it is possible for you. Don’t worry if you see someone waking up at 4:30am to practice, but you can’t manage to do it. The best way to practice is the way you can!
  • The best piece of advice I received was to tune into what is true for me with the practice and with what resonates for me personally.
  • I would say: Just do it. Follow your teacher and don’t worry about your capacity to do the posture the same way they are. Each one of us is different: our bodies need different things and, so do our minds. Don’t worry about your thoughts during meditation, they are like clouds passing through the sky. Don’t try to fix anything, judge anything, just be in contact with your own experience.
  • Pick three “go-to” practices and start there. Do them. That’s where the change happens.
  • When we start our daily practice some patterns and undesirable thoughts and feelings will come. This is all part of the cleansing process. Sometimes it will be hard to do the practice, sometimes it will be soft and joyful. This happens even with skillful practitioners. Believe in the journey and deliver yourself. Even if you were bored or feeling powerless, sit and do the practice.
