Amethyst: The Purple Ray of Peace

Amethyst is said to be the ‘stone of peace.’ While bringing a sense of spiritual calm, the Amethyst also raises hopes and lifts the spirits, bringing thoughts of the spiritual realms that shape our lives.

The Amethyst is also used to increase psychic awareness. Since it is a stone of great wisdom, it allows the information received through the psyche to be appropriately used. Amethyst can facilitate meditation and is said to enhance communion with one’s guides and angels. It opens and clears the Third Eye and Crown chakras, which accelerates the development of intuitive abilities.

In healing work, Amethyst is a classic meditative tool and it helps in understanding the cause of disease or imbalance. It brings with it protection and purification. Many people believe it is of great service when used to stop cravings and addictive behavior patterns including nicotine, drinking, or drug use. It helps to balance the nervous system and the brain. Amethyst also supports oxygenation in the blood, helping to improve the body’s assimilation of oxygen and the elimination of waste. It is also used under the pillow during sleep to bring peaceful dreams, end any nightmares, and protect against psychic attack.

Amethyst is a perfect stone for the enhancement of one’s physical environment. It is often placed in the home or healing room to keep the space clear, thus bringing a sense of peace and well-being.

A brilliant violet form of Quartz, Amethyst is colored by iron and tends to form geodes (sometimes called ‘thunder rocks’) of densely packed short crystals, all pointing inwards towards the center of the hollow. The beautiful color varies from very dark, to a delicate violet often called “Lilac Amethyst.” Amethyst crystals and rough gems are found in many locations throughout the world including Europe, Brazil, Bolivia, Africa, Mexico, Canada, Russia, and the U.S.

Amethyst’s name comes from a Greek word meaning “not drunken.” It was believed by the Greeks that Amethyst would prevent intoxication and bring calming, soothing energy. Amethyst stones have an affinity to the Crown Chakra just above the top of the head. This chakra relates to functions of the brain and mind, and is the master control center for the whole chakra system.

A similar stone, Ametrine, is a natural combination of Amethyst and Citrine in the same stone and is found mostly in Brazil. It holds the same brilliant beautiful colors of purple mixed with the golden rays of Citrine. Very similar healing properties are associated with this special stone. It combines the elements of Wind and Fire and aids the development of one’s ability to take action with spiritual guidance while overcoming any fear. It will keep the mind alert.

Consider either Amethyst or Ametrine when picking the stones for your next meditation mala or necklace. You will be making a direct connection with the Crown Chakra and enhancing the prayer for peace, light, and love within yourself and for all you come in contact with.
