Excerpts from a lecture given on September 12, 1979 in Pittsburgh, PA
Meditation is a science and an art to understand the initiative of the intuitive mind and pass it through the will. You have two things—one is will, the other is impulse. Every animal, every living being, has the impulse. You are not the only one.
Whenever you act under impulse you will end up with a disaster. Period. Because you don't have any defense mechanism, nothing. You don't have a hide, you don't have a coat, you don't have a defense mechanism like horns or hoofs. A giraffe can just shake his neck and hit the elephant so hard that the elephant just falls. A horse can kill a lion if it can get him on his back, flying up in the air. Every animal and bird or fish, even a skunk has a defense mechanism—he puts his tail up and there goes the whole world with it.
You have nothing, but you still have the driving force that is impulse. The moment the pulse gives the impulse—whether it is positive or negative, you have the impulse to act. But you don't have a defense mechanism so you do not know when you act, what you are going to end up with.
But if you have intuition to know what will cause what effect—what will be the effect of your action—if you can see that, intuitively feel it, that is your defense mechanism. People are unhappy because they act and they end up with a disaster. They do not know why they act. They acted right, they acted in good faith, they were beautiful. But what beauty can buy you safety?
You can have the best car, perfect engine, gas, everything all right, but what if you apply the brakes and they don’t work? Man without intuitive mind is a car without brakes. An intuitive mind cannot be achieved without a meditative mind. The meditative mind is a process to the intuitive mind. As long as you don’t balance with the meditative mind, you are not complete.
You have a girlfriend and you sleep with her. After two weeks she tells you she is pregnant. You do not know what to do because you don't have a mind that can think, compute and totally finalize. Your main answer is, “I don't know what you are saying, I don't know what you should do, I don't know what I am going to do.” It's ridiculous to be a human being and not know who you are, what you are, where you are, why you are, and what is going on.
You can never have flexibility without an intuitive mind. You can't cope with anything because to cope with something is the mind, and if mind cannot change gears, you can't catch up with speed. Have you seen those trucks going up the hill—grr, grr, grr, grr—about ten miles an hour because they can't catch up the speed.
When you act under impulse and your impulse is controlled by the intuitive mind, then you know where to go, why to go, how to come back, why to come back, when to come back, when to start, when to stop, what it will mean to you, who are you. That is the meditative mind: who am I, what am I, where am I, why am I. All these questions are answered. You can have tons of clouds and never see the sun though there is a sun. You have to clear the clouds and that is the role of the meditative mind.
Meditation is an art and a science to create in you the intuitive mind. Mind has plus and minus. You are thinking negative or positive, the same mind can take you to the mountains; it can take you to dungeons.
As long as you do not do the right technology, you won't get to a stage of experience where you can open up to your self—to an intuitive state of possibility. When you have an intuitive state of possibility, then everything which comes to you or goes from you is already computerized intuitively. It is a state of development that the meditative mind gives. Otherwise sometimes you are peaceful, sometimes you are not, sometimes you are comfortable, sometimes you are tense, sometimes you are high, sometimes you are depressed.
The intuitive mind computes all the thoughts and tells you what these thoughts mean to you within the paraphernalia of your existence. You select them by your will. Choice is always yours. God gave you that choice and it is always with you. You chose to come today. Circumstances allowed you to come, and you chose it. If you would not have chosen to come, there would be perfect circumstances where you would not have come.
You will have the answer for everything. You will compute everything. That is what intuitive mind is. There is no chance of doubt, anxiety, pressure, or depression.
Your intuitive mind is going to tell you what these environments mean to you and what you mean to these environments. Impulse is the basic driving force of life. The intuitive mind can computerize the pros and cons of every impulse and your will can choose it. But if your ego chooses the impulse, you do not know what you are doing because ego is too limited. Ego gives only one side of you; intuitive mind gives you the total overall of the whole thing.
At the time your you is represented with a situation to decide, one side is the will, the other side is ego. When you listen to the will you are successful. When you listen to the ego you are disaster. When you act totally blindly, without knowing—that is the non-intuitive mind. The intuitive mind can totally put a picture before you, and the non-intuitive mind—just under impulse, let us act. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
What is meditation? Meditation is a science and an art to see your impulse—what drives you, keeps you going, keeps you living—through the intuitive mind.
