Yogi Bhajan Lecture: Recharge Yourself with the Sound Current

Excerpts from a lecture given on 3/24/72 at Oakland Community College in Farmington, Michigan

If you look at your structure, your existence, and without any prejudice think over it, this automatic breathing machinery in you is enough to prove to you that you are under the supervision of a power which is beyond you. Mind is not subject to time and mind follows the breath, pavan guru. And if you can hold your breath, you can basically relate to one phenomenon—that scattered mind will become more together.

People who have done real jap of the mantra or followed the shabad or the science of the sound current, understand that when they have to die, the breath should leave in the same mantra. Suppose you practice Sat Nam and you have satya for it—the basic energy to relate to that Infinity—then under any circumstances and under any impact on your subconscious, the sound current of Sat Nam should be automatic in you. When a man is caught in the coma of death, then the mind is trapped at that moment. The soul has to shift on to the astral self and it has to choose which direction. It is the sound current which can decide it.

The existence of the atom is on the vibratory combination of electron, proton, and neutron. Extension of the atom is the light and the existence of the atom is the sound. We always have a mental form to relate to and if, in meditation, we can sit down and feel we are vibrating a signal to the Infinity and receiving back the contact, if you get to do it constantly in a solid fifteen minutes, you will feel how beautiful, how light, how enjoyable you are.

What keeps me going? That's a simple question. If I can just calm myself down, pull myself to the extent of the sound current of Wahe Guru, I feel I am part of the ecstasy of the Universe and Universe is part of me. And if you can lean on that sound, this sound of bliss and joy—a bij mantra—or you can feel in you the satya, and you can relate to the sound of Sat Nam—Nam means noun, identity, your identity is a part of the totality—then you can recharge yourself into that higher vibratory system and it can keep you going.

If you can build your mind on this word or the sound or the Shabad, and then you can physically practice that with each breath, you can always pull in the satya and you create the sound current of Sat Nam. And then you bring out the ecstasy and say Wahe Guru

In one breath when you inhale, you say Sat Nam: in me is the existence of the truth; and you exhale and you say, Wahe Guru: I am in ecstasy of that greatness. You run your mind into that cycle with the cycle of that breath. It doesn't take a long time to understand that you are in the stage of ecstasy and you have rebuilt your own self. And thus you can capture your mind and subconscious into the lotus self of purity. You will have a fragrance in you. As in the rose there is a fragrance, in your human body there shall be a beauty which shall be felt in a vibratory effect by all people.

And if behind it there is a truth, satya, it will lead to the state of activity where you can affect the consciousness of fellow beings towards the Creator, the Cosmos, the infinite guru of all gurus, the God of God, the Creator, the architect, the designer of this being, the being of the being we call karta purakh.

It is this capacity of you—that you can sit down and with your total energy you can be in the mind to Infinity and relish in you the sound, the shabad Wahe Guru, and you can come out saying Wahe Guru, Wahe Guru. You have seen that existence beyond the limit of the physical. When the known experiences the light of the Infinite, the unknown and the known become one.  Then the light becomes the light of the Universe and Universe starts showing the radiance in this limited light, and this state of consciousness belongs to all.

That is why Guru Nanak said, "One who does it gets it."

Sat Naam. We'll chant it with the breath of life and relate to it in a meditative form and feel that we exist and how much we exist with the satya of the Universe.

Thy grace prevail, O formless, omniscient, all prevailing, cosmos, undying akaal. O satya in the human being in the form of existence, beyond all limits. O limitless, O thou, the Creator of this cosmic consciousness, let thy will prevail. Let all be one with everyone.
