Summer Solstice is Coming. Ready to Start a New Chapter?

The longest day of the year is approaching and from June 15 to 21, 2023, 3HO is hosting the Summer Solstice Festival at Ram Das Puri in Espanola, New Mexico. Who would have guessed that a global pandemic would have sidelined this annual gathering for four consecutive years? But if you think we’re gathering to go “back to the old days,” think again. The foundation under our feet has changed, and in that shift comes a remarkable opportunity.

The move from the Piscean Age to the Age of Aquarius is an intense one, and over the last years, our old world has dissolved, leaving a new one to emerge. Old jobs have disappeared while new ones have been created. Social dynamics have rearranged, cultural norms have transformed, and technology has evolved, ushering in a strange new world.

On an even more direct level, this is the first time the Summer Solstice Festival has been held since the allegations against Yogi Bhajan surfaced.  While the compassionate reconciliation path started in 2020, it is still very much an evolving process as the community works to find its new equilibrium.

It can feel a bit overwhelming, but these ever-changing skies offer silver linings and even the possibility of a brilliant rainbow.

A Turning Point

You may have heard that the Chinese word for crisis, “weiji,” is a synthesis of the Chinese characters meaning “danger” and “opportunity.” This isn’t exactly accurate, but the real synthesis is even more powerful. Wēi does indeed translate to “danger,” but ji translates more accurately to “a crucial point” or “when something begins to change.”

In these last four years, we’ve arrived at that crucial point, and the opportunity for each of us is that we can choose a new direction. Have a job you want to quit? Ready to change your living situation? Do you have a dream you’ve always wanted to pursue? If you’ve ever wanted to change your life, this is your moment.

The background is shifting around us, offering us a new way of life. From where to live to what currency we spend, we have options today that we didn’t have four years ago. Adaptation is the name of the game, and those who can reinvent themselves to make sense of this new world are the ones who are thriving.

The Tools for Change

If you are reading this, you probably already know that Kundalini Yoga offers a tremendous toolkit to help integrate these changes. From kriyas to energize you and meditations to reverse negativity, you’ll find plenty of resources to help you navigate uncertainty. But one key piece of the Kundalini Yoga world that often gets overlooked is the community itself.

The Kundalini Yoga Community

The Kundalini  Yoga community is a powerful one that goes well beyond the shared practice of Kundalini Yoga. You’ll find a diverse group of people committed to self-improvement and self-awareness. The community includes people from dramatically different backgrounds who share core values of self-development, service, and compassion.

Why is Community Important?

  • Community provides us with a sense of belonging. It gives us people to turn to when we need help, support, or even just someone to bear witness to our experience. Life is a group effort, and having a community helps you weather your personal storms and celebrate your victories.
  • Community provides us with a sense of purpose. When we are part of something larger than ourselves, it gives our life a deeper sense of meaning. And when your life has meaning and purpose, the challenges feel less overwhelming. Being part of a strong community helps you stay connected to your purpose.
  • Community provides us with a sense of security. When we are part of a strong supportive community, we understand that we are not alone. We know we have people to back us up and support us through difficult times. And we have friends at our side to celebrate our successes and triumphs too.

Summer Solstice gives us an opportunity to renew our practice, reinvent our way of being in the world, and come together as a community. It’s hard to predict what the festival will bring you, but you can be sure it will be memorable. And for those of you who can’t come in person, a virtual option is available. This event is available with community-supported pricing so that people who can’t come in person can participate online. And if neither of those events speak to you, maybe you can find some other special way to honor the day.

A brave new world is beckoning, and the Summer Solstice is a good time to celebrate it.
