Seva & Service

Seva & Service

As we journey to realize our total human potential, a question arises for many yogis: what can I do with all this invigorating creative energy? How can I take what I’ve learned and make an impact in the world? The answer is called seva, or selfless service.

Practicing Kundalini Yoga opens you up to the limitless possibilities of our innate power as humans. The yogic lifestyle does not end with breathing exercises, physical postures, and meditative focus.

As we journey to realize our total human potential, a question arises for many yogis: what can I do with all this invigorating creative energy? How can I take what I’ve learned and make an impact in the world?

The answer is called seva, or selfless service.

The spiritual awareness cultivated in Kundalini Yoga practice is even more vital when it is used in the service of others. In the most concise terms, seva means to give without asking for anything in return. To serve without reward. To uplift and inspire those who need it. In this tradition, it is believed that seva has the ability to raise the consciousness of both the server and the recipient.

Seva can take many forms. The yogis often refer to the concept of Karma Yoga, where yogis participate in group consciousness and wellbeing by taking time to clean a common space, cook food for others, or perform a deed that benefits the whole—without any expectation of reward. Seva can be as simple yet significant as talking with someone who is feeling sad or offering to make yogi tea or lead sadhana at your local yoga studio. The core ingredient in seva is energy outside of the self; it is a service that requires nothing in return, not even acknowledgment or gratitude.
