Yogi Bhajan Lecture: On Unity and Division

Excerpts from Success and the Spirit; The Breath of Life is a Gift to Share

If you are a Muslim and you call everybody who is not a Muslim an infidel, that is not dharma. That is not religion. If you are a Christian and you don't relate to anybody who is not Christian, that is not dharma. If you are a Jew and you say, "I am the chosen one and everybody else is nothing"; that is not dharma. Whenever you reach a saturated point, you are a dead idiot because your flexibility is gone.

When your physical flexibility is gone, you are very sick and when your mental flexibility is gone, you are very, very sick. It doesn't give you anything. There is nothing, no sin you can commit and there is no nice graceful thing you can do. The only question is how flexible you are.

Ultimately, today, tomorrow or the next day, this body will become stiff. There is no way around it. It will consume itself because the breath of life will not be consumed.

That's why pranayam is the way of life. We're not asking that everybody should do yoga. "Oh, it is an eastern thing. Oh, it is a western thing." What does that mean? Eastern and Western thing? My east is New York. My west is Hawaii. What is east and west? We have made phrases to demarcate ourselves and separate ourselves from life. This is Chinese. This is Japanese. This is American. This is Canadian. We have marked the world by boundaries and have divided people by signs, symptoms and language. It is amazing. Our life is amazing. We live on one Earth and one Universe and yet we are not universal. We are not.

However much you don't understand, that much you contract. And if you are contracted, then what is the use of life? Do you know each other? No. You work hard your whole life, and never know each other. Not to understand compassion is not to understand God. God is an impulse of expansion and man is a compassionately understanding expansion. That's the first law to remember.

The only thing you will know when you are compassionate and as vast as the ocean, is that everybody else is like a little boat on it. Everybody is a part of you. If you do not understand that everybody is a part of you then you do not understand who you are.

We have come to go. Have we prepared ourselves for going? We are always ready to come. Coming is important and going is not. Yet, go we must. Know we must. And the most important thing is we must show that we are ready to go. If you understand that, you will never fight with anybody, you will never hate anybody and you will never squeeze anybody. It will be very difficult then for you to separate yourself from the Universe at large.
