Security

The Security Service Team is responsible for the physical safety and well-being of the participants and the camp. The primary duties of the Security Team are to staff the camp entrance, monitor the flow of traffic (both pedestrian and vehicular) into and out of camp, patrol the entire camp, act as an information resource for all attendees, maintain order in the parking areas, and coordinate with other service areas, local law enforcement, and emergency response teams in the event of an emergency. Through the successful completion of our duties we hold the space for a peaceful and joyous camp experience for all. Security Team members will be expected to rotate among the different posts. This is the only team that operates 24 hours, which gives you a great opportunity to complete your exchange hours while no camp activities are taking place. You may be seated at the Front Gate or in the office, or walking around camp patrolling the Bazaar and tenting areas. We are the first people that participants see as they arrive on-site and highly visible in camp while on shift; the priority is to be welcoming, knowledgeable, and firm. You must be able to give direction and hold boundaries regarding requests for information from participants, badge display, parking and other security concerns. No previous security experience is necessary. All service exchange members will be trained. All members who are accepted and register for the team must be willing to wear the Security uniform during their shift (vest, ankle length pants/leggings/churridars, closed toed rugged shoes, and the provided head covering/shawl). Submission of this application indicates that you agree to ALL camp rules and regulations and are willing and able to uphold them. Manager: Dharampal Kaur: [email protected] Requirements:

  • Prepare to serve approximately 6 hours per day and attend the daily morning meeting. The initial training days will be longer than 6 hours.
  • Previous Summer Solstice attendance, CPR, First Aid, and disaster training are a plus.

Please note that if you are a parent traveling with a child under three years of age you may not apply for a service exchange position in any area except the Solstice Youth Co-op Program.

We prefer applicants who have attended at least one Solstice Sadhana Celebration, but if you have a lot of experience working with children, please apply.  Set Up/Break Down Crew- Closed

The Solstice Setup Crew is responsible for setting the intention for a blessed, healing, inspiring experience at Solstice. The team needs strong souls who are comfortable with long day filled with physical work. General tasks include unpacking stored items, setting up areas of camp, caring for the land, treating compost, painting signs, placing signs, a degree of skilled carpentry and landscaping work, cleaning and creating the sacred space. Service in the Set Up kitchen includes preparation and serving daily meals and snacks for the team and other arriving service team members prior to the start of the event. All in all, it's a good mix of physical, creative, hard, fun, work. "Happiness comes out of contentment, and contentment always comes out of service." Yogi Bhajan The best thing is the blessing of spending so much time at Guru Ram Das Puri in the company of your fellow setup yogis. The land is so beautiful and peaceful, and the experience is very deep. Break down can be energetically taxing and happens very quickly after camp closes. It is important that everyone is a team player and that we know you are committed to serving until breakdown is finished. If you have been on the set up/breakdown crew before and had a hard time with breakdown, or left early because you were too tired to work or cannot commit to the breakdown process for any other reason, we strongly suggest that you apply to another Service Exchange area. The commitment to Set up/Break Down crew is difficult and intense but also deeply rewarding. You will create new and close friendships, learn something new about yourself, and your Solstice experience will be unique and fantastic. Manager: Jap Prem Singh, [email protected] Requirements:

  • Arrive on Friday June 6th by between 3pm and 5pm.
  • Formal Service begins the morning of Saturday June 7th.
  • Set up continues through Thursday June 19th.

  • Breakdown begins in the morning after Sadhana on Saturday June 28th and continues until 2pm on Sunday, June 29th
  • If you cannot commit to these dates, please apply for one of our other awesome Service Scholarships.

**Important Note** 50% of the work on Set up/Break Down crew happens at the end of Solstice when we must clean up after camp and put away everything we set up. This half of the work we do is easily as difficult, if not more difficult than setting up. But it is equally as important as it sets the stage for a better set up for next year’s program.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Karma Yoga and Service Support

Every year at our Summer Solstice participants sign up for Karma Yoga as a way to give back for the beautiful experience they receive at Summer Solstice. Karma Yoga is an integral part of Solstice, as each of us creates a shared Solstice experience by contributing through service. As part of the Karma Yoga Support Team you will help support the needs of the karma yogis and service exchange participants by keeping in touch with area managers to schedule where people might best serve on any given day, helping to track and encourage attendance at Karma Yoga meetings and educating participants about the joy of seva. This team needs people who are inspired by and understand how to share the energy of giving. You will also be at the Karma Yoga table in the Onsite Check In/Registration Area signing up those who did not register on-line for their karma yoga team. This requires people who are able to remain calm during hectic times and be a patient and engaging personality to educate people about what they will be doing in their Karma Yoga area. You also will be helping people who register onsite choose a Karma yoga option that suits them. For these reasons, we only accept people who have previously attended a Solstice event. As Yogi Bhajan said, "We are on this planet to love each other, to serve each other, and to uplift each other. We have come on this Earth to give, not to take. Don’t take pride in taking. Give and you will be given virtues. And that will give you God." Manager: Guruatma Kaur Requirements:

  • You must be available for the entire duration of the exchange.
  • Prepare to serve approximately 6 hours per day, in a variety of ways.
  • Arrive on Wednesday June 18th by 6pm

There are 7 main areas of the Kitchen that prepare and cook the food for our breakfast, lunch, and dinner. New this year, you can apply directly to the Kitchen team on which you would like to serve. You can apply to up to 2 areas in the kitchen. 6. Kitchen Greeters

    1. Manager: Gurvinderpal Singh- Several wise Solstice-goers have been overheard sharing this sentiment: “There are two hearts of Solstice. One is the Gurdwara, the other is the Kitchen”. You could say one feeds the Soul, and the other feeds the Body. The kitchen is a busy, popular, happening and heavily-trafficked space at Solstice. As a member of the Kitchen Greeter team, you will help to field visitors’ questions and requests, connecting them with the information and resources they need, as well as help to coordinate kitchen use between the many service areas that use this space. Expect to work 1 or 2 shifts a day with times that vary throughout the day. Must be personable, friendly, and a quick learner. Previous Solstice Kitchen experience required!
  7. Kitchen-Clean-up

    1. Manager: Guru Sahai Kaur- Probably one of the most under-rated, unsung, and most rewarding sevas you can do at Solstice. The humble service of cleaning the Solstice kitchen will lead you beyond the ego that binds you in place and wash away the karma of lifetimes that holds you still, blessing you with a clearer perspective and connection with the Universal Forces behind all that is. Cleaning duties include mopping the floors in quiet times of day, and washing pots, buckets and utensils used by every member of the kitchen team, ensuring they are clean and sanitized to keep the camp healthy and positive. You can choose to find solitude and calmness while serving the needs of the controlled chaos of the early morning kitchen, or you can choose to celebrate the day through a unified small group experience in the quiet of the evening kitchen, serving not only the entire camp through your cleaning seva but also those who come to the door of the kitchen seeking assistance. Whatever time you choose to serve, your spirit will soar and you will return sparkling as brightly as our blessed kitchen.

18. Family Registration

Solstice is a family experience, and just as 'grown-ups' have registration, we have created a special registration for children. Here we sign up kids for camp, provide information about the schedule of activities, and make sure parents know where to go and how to find out more information. All of our children's programs are run as cooperative efforts between parents and our lead guides. The Children's Registration Team supports this by connecting parents with Karma Yoga opportunities for the Children's Program. The team is friendly, inviting and supportive of parents, and playful with children. It is a wonderful opportunity to serve the families that make up our Community. Manager: Dhanwant Kaur, [email protected] Requirements:

  • Prepare to work an average of six hours per day. Our schedule is heavier early in Solstice, so those days are longer, but the remaining days get shorter.
