"Drugs are not being taken for any other reason than that people cannot face their reality, yet drugs take them to non-reality. At that moment give them survival, that’s all. Every stimulant, every drug, every love, every relationship is based on affirmation of non-reality." ~Yogi Bhajan
Yogi Bhajan understood the drive to use drugs is an attempt to change one’s consciousness, to fill an inner emptiness. But drugs do not provide a way to build any real basis for a new consciousness; Kundalini Yoga as Taught by Yogi Bhajan® creates immediate, actual changes in consciousness.2
Yogi Bhajan knew that by doing Kundalini Yoga, students would not only experience an even higher “high,” but they would be repairing their nervous systems and brains.2
Drugs increase stress on the nervous system in many ways:1
All drugs – stimulants, uppers, downers – control the opening and closing capacity of the working of the brain’s metabolism. In any normally functioning brain, when you take drugs, you make it function abnormally.1
Sadhana has been designed to cover three areas: physical, mental, and spiritual. Many people who stick to sadhana have been found to be totally clear of the effects and abnormalities – physical, mental, or spiritual – created by the use of drugs.1
Yogi Bhajan said that takes three years of doing Kundalini Yoga and eating a healthy diet to repair the damage that drugs had done. He let people discover for themselves they could get higher on Kundalini Yoga than on anything else. It’s a personal spiritual experience with no damaging side-effects.2
There are many powerful Kundalini Yoga meditation techniques for breaking addictions and rebuilding the psyche, as well as clearing the body. In fact, there are even drug rehabilitation and cleansing programs operating under these principles. Kirtan Kriya (found in the Specific Kriyas and Meditation section) is a powerful, effective process for changing habits. Also, consult with a Kundalini Yoga teacher for more specific techniques.
Use of recreational drugs is not recommended for anyone, but especially not for students of Kundalini Yoga, and most especially not just before practicing yoga. With a drug high, the powerful energies we excite may get out of control with unpredictable and possibly dangerous effects.1
Kundalini Yoga students should consult with their doctors about doing Kundalini Yoga if they have medical conditions and if they are taking prescription drugs.1
