Communication

“The definition of communication is a practice that creates a ‘common notion’ with another person or object of attention." ~Yogi Bhajan

PURPOSE OF COMMUNICATION

The purpose of communication is to discharge your whole self, directly and completely.9

In the words of Yogi Bhajan, “Whenever you communicate, you must have purpose. You must have a manner. And you must have a theme to deliver. Whenever you communicate to control or talk or introduce your motive or your legislation, or you want to be what you want to be, you are wasting your communication energy. People want to talk, but they don’t want to talk about that which is not of mutual interest to both parties.”9

Conscious (harmonious) versus Unconscious communication

The normal condition when we try to communicate is from the narrow perspective of our own experience and ego. We sense only part of the reality before us and automatically imagine the whole picture from our own perspective. In addition, the mind is very, very busy. It is full of chatter and imagination.9

We need to speak each word creatively as if it really matters. We need to speak each word one-pointedly, faithfully, courageously, directly, and simply. When you become one with what you say, the other person senses what you mean and that what you say will be honored by you and the Infinite.9

In the discipline of conscious communication, we learn to recognize that we automatically and instinctively communicate on many levels at once. We learn to align our verbal, nonverbal, and subtle messages into an effective, creative communication.9

How to communicate effectively

Yogi Bhajan used a formula of communication to inspire all those with whom he interacted: poke, provoke, confront, and elevate. This style of communication requires fearless love in order to connect, engage, and uplift with the people around us.

Poke: Bring your heart-mind to focus on the person. Ask probing questions to investigate.

Provoke: Stir what you have found by circumstance and the results of the poking. Ask questions that incite a deeper response about what is the depth of the situation. Understand and map it out.

Confront: Take charge of the chakra and aura. Speak directly without letting the person slip from the focus. Challenge directly the habit, not the person.

Elevate: Uplift the person by raising the energy, projecting your radiance, and commanding the higher centers. Transformation is based on inspiration and support and the giving of hope.

RULES of HARMONIOUS COMMUNICATION

Harmonious communication is the capacity to use conscious communication effectively under all circumstances, even those of conflict and challenge. It happens where there is oneness between the spheres of intelligence and consciousness, where heart and head meet.9

Yogi Bhajan gave these five rules for communication:1

Rule 1: You are communicating for a better tomorrow, not to spoil today.

Rule 2: Whatever you are going to say is going to live forever. And you have to live through it. Therefore, take care you don’t have to live through the mud of your own communication.

Rule 3: One wrong word said can do much more wrong than you can even imagine or even estimate.

Rule 4: Words spoken are a chance for communication. Don’t turn them into a war.

Rule 5: When you communicate, you have to communicate again. Don’t make the road rough.

Listening

We need to tune into our power in order listen. We need to understand how much being listened to means to us. We often want others to listen to what we say but have a harder time hearing what is really meant from the other person. This is a normal condition of our mind, environment, and cultures.9

We need to raise our awareness of listening and its effects. Not just listen, but deeply listen, consciously, fully, with ears, mind, and heart. This requires being fully present to and conscious of our intuition, our greatest tool for conscious communication.9

PRAYER

Many of us have old understanding of prayer. We imagine sitting and begging a distant deity or saint for acknowledgment or to fill a need. In this way we were taught to wish, ask, and plead rather than communicate heart to heart, recognize our Infinite self, and confirm our consciousness.9

The Aquarian approach is different. We feel no separation between Infinite, God, and our Self. That means the task of prayer is understood in a new way.9

Prayer is the most powerful technique to communicate to the unknown. That unknown is within and without. It does not have the boundaries that our conscious mind creates and depends upon.9

We can never make the entire Unknown known. Rather we can have a known relationship to the Unknown. Prayer is tapping energy from my own Unknown. Whenever you want to reach your own Unknown you pray. And the only channel through which your own Unknown can reach you for help is the power of your own prayer.9
