All the 3HO family worldwide would like to wish Shakti Parwha Kaur, the Mother of 3HO, a very Healthy, Happy, Holy Birthday!
We love and honor her for her life of service and sacrifice. She has taught the 3HO way of life to countless souls through her writing, teaching and counseling, as well as through her graceful presence.
Shakti Parwha Kaur Khalsa was assigned the role of Mother of 3HO by Yogi Bhajan in 1969 when he established the Healthy, Happy, Holy Organization (3HO). She was the first woman in the United States to be trained in Kundalini Yoga by the Master, Yogi Bhajan, and started teaching it in 1969.
Before she met him she spent fifteen years exploring various spiritual paths, including making a pilgrimage to India. When she returned from India, she then met Yogiji who told her it was her destiny to be a teacher. At first she was a bit skeptical, but since that time, she has devoted her life to practicing and teaching the 3HO way of life.
Her homespun personal philosophy: "If you want to be happy, there are two things you have to do (in addition to daily sadhana). Have the right containers for everything, and don't take yourself too seriously."
Author of Kundalini Yoga: The Flow of Eternal Power, her writing style mixes profound ideas with humor and a friendly conversational tone. She uses songs, poems, stories and simple bullet points to make this ancient sacred science easy and appealing to both new students and seasoned practitioners alike.
She created a Tool Kit for Teaching Beginners Kundalini Yoga which is used in KRI teacher training courses. For over thirty years she produced the 3HO newsletter, The Science of Keeping Up, full of tips and tools, Yogi Bhajan lecture excerpts, and everything we needed to know to live the teachings of Yogi Bhajan. Both author and editor of many articles and publications, the IKYTA newsletter, Kundalini Rising; the Prosperity Paths newsletter; and 3HO's monthly newsletter, Aquarian Times, were among them.
Another of her priceless books, Kundalini Postures and Poetry, contains fascinating photos of Yogi Bhajan in classic yoga poses with poems to accompany the photos.
She wrote Marriage on the Spiritual Path because, as she says, "Yogi Bhajan told me to." Often she gave her famous 'Don't Get Married' talk to couples considering marriage. It was her earnest desire to help people to go into the institution of marriage with the full awareness of what it takes to sustain a committed relationship.
She traveled to various cities throuhgout the Western Hemisphere as a facilitator for White Tantric Yoga®. As Yogi Bhajan's Executive Secretary, she served him and the Sikh Dharma and 3HO organizations for many years.
Shakti is an avid movie-goer (you can read her movie reviews Here on her blog). Known for her youthful exuberance, lighthearted humor, and tendency to burst into song without a moment's notice, she has been an amazing presence in our lives.
Here are just a few of the many articles she has written over the years. Everything she writes instills in us a kernal of wisdom from her long experience with Yogi Bhajan and from living his teachings.
Dear Shakti, thank you for all of your inspiration, your years of selfless service, your humor, and your expansive heart—all shared with us from your sincere desire to uplift humanity.
