On July 1st, Mercury pauses to resume direct motion! Whew! It’s been an intense Mercury Retrograde period for many of us. Within a few weeks, Mercury will be well beyond the point at which it turned retrograde, and we ourselves can begin looking and moving forward.
Jupiter in Leo
Around the time Mercury reaches its retrograde point, Jupiter ushers us into a year with a very different undertone than the last. For the past year, Jupiter has been moving through the sign of Cancer, and it has been a year of expanding into our inner world of emotions, sensitivity, intuition, imagination (for good or “ill”), and our sense of rootedness and connectedness to family and tribe on small and large scales.
Throughout the past year, I have described our high, evolutionary assignment of revamping our understanding of what emotions are for. We have been asked to increase our emotional intelligence, becoming conscious of our emotions as important feedback about the self-identity we hold in any moment. In that way, we are more capable of detaching from the emotion itself, and purposefully realigning with a more expanded, mature, less limited identity. The level of our increased emotional intelligence will directly effect our experience of Jupiter’s passage through the next zodiac sign of Leo.
On July 16th, Jupiter—the king of the gods of Olympus—enters Leo—the sign of the Lion, the king of the jungle. For a full year, we will be expanding ourselves into the territory of self, of increasing our sense of aliveness and joy and playfulness, of building our internal and external experience of grandness. Part of the blessing of Jupiter is to expand our thinking and our expectations. This Jupiter asks us to broaden ourselves and step beyond anything that has kept us hidden, unseen, and feeling under-appreciated, misunderstood or unloved.
Like the cowardly lion in The Wizard of Oz, we may believe that we are not strong enough within ourselves to go for what we want to be, but in reality, the heart of courage is always within us and we need not feel small or look to some external wizard to give us something we lack. If we navigate this next year well, we will step out into life, saying Yes to things we haven’t before for any number of reasons; we will own and grow our egos in new ways.
In spiritual circles, it is common to malign the ego, to think of it as a bad thing. Ego in itself is not bad; in this tough world, we wouldn’t survive long or get along well in life without a healthy, solid sense of self. That positive facet of ego helps us keep up with the world without being crushed underfoot by others.
A strong, healthy ego structure enables us to forge out into society to express who we are and make our mark. So, my caution this year is not about the “dangers” of healthy ego, but the issues that arise from an inflated ego “run amok.” With this combination we are meant to grow beyond our current paradigm and definition of ourselves; but we should attempt to keep our self-awareness intact, too, because the shadow side of Jupiter in Leo can be an egotistical largesse, a feeling that all life should revolve around us, and that we should always get everything we want, exactly as we want it and when we want it.
For some who tend toward more natural grace and quietude, the challenge is perhaps to become stronger characters. For others who are naturally strong and bold, easily expanding into life more and more as time passes, Jupiter in Leo may teach of the wisdom required to expand our identities only in ways that are truly meaningful and well-chosen, rather than just trying to become “more,” bigger and higher out of habit. Some of us overextend ourselves beyond what would be fulfilling and make us happy, only to find that when we become what we sought to become, we’ve gotten into something we don’t want (or want to be) after all.
Jupiter can bring us a sense of discontent in our lives as they are, and sometimes we get into a mindset that the ever-unfolding state of things is never enough. Such a constant state of discontent is not “divine”; the grass is not always greener on “the other side” from where we are. In a Jupiter time, we may become stuck in an auto-pilot mode of wanting to do, be and achieve more, and reach farther and farther away from our core self and what’s genuinely meaningful to us. IS there always something better? What if that something better is along different lines of a clearer psyche, a healed and whole mind, an understanding that there is more to this life than how we have defined and been living it? Jupiter is calling for all of us to expand our identities, make no mistake. But our wisdom needs to be engaged in the expansion.
We are in for a year of inflated “fire in the belly.” This is particularly true as we continue to experience the evolutionary churning of the Uranus-Pluto squares. We can anticipate that Jupiter in Leo will increase and perhaps exacerbate the Uranus in Aries urge for independence, individuation, and freedom from limitations and oppression. Some of us will benefit greatly from that combined Jupiter-Uranus freedom and change.
If we get carried away and our behavior is really “too much,” others may respond to that overinflated ego behavior with rejection. As Sara Bareilles sings in her song King of Anything, “And who cares if you disagree? You are not me. Who made you king of anything? So you dare tell me who to be. Who died and made you king of anything?” We may feel this way ourselves and it may give us the “gumption” to break free from our bindings… or we may have others respond to us this way. Again, I remind us of the lessons in emotional maturity from the past year. If we remember the right use of our emotions and internal sensitivity, we stand a better chance of claiming more aliveness, more “more” in healthy, balanced ways.
I will be writing about these themes throughout the next year; for now I will simply begin by asking:
- Who do you think you are?
- Who do you want to be as you continue to evolve and grow? Why? Is the future self you envision based on others’ visions for you, or on long-dreamt fantasies that may no longer fit for you, or on what you truly want for yourself in the wisdom of your heart and soul?
- How can your expansiveness over the next year reflect not only a grander self-identity and presence in life, but also a warmer soul that overflows with the generous heart of a benevolent king who cares and watches over his people?
