Summer Solstice Sadhana Celebration
Ram Das Puri, Española, New Mexico
June 19 – June 28, 2008
General Information
Sat Nam!
Congratulations to making the decision to spend Summer Solstice Sadhana with us this year. We look forward to meeting you and supporting you as you go through this powerful transformational experience in the enchanting Jemez Mountains of New Mexico.
Ram Das Puri is a beautiful campsite located high in the mountains of northern New Mexico. Every summer, this peaceful and pristine land hosts one of the largest yoga gatherings in the world. Through the love, devotion and selfless service of hundreds of Kundalin Yoga practitioners, Ram Das Puri becomes a yoga village – a place where people can deeply connect with the earth, each other and their spiritual discipline.
Environment
Our Summer Solstice Sadhana Campsite, called Ram Das Puri, is located in the mountainous high desert of Northern New Mexico. It is a dry environment at an altitude of 7000 feet (~2500m). It often takes two or three days to acclimate. It is very important for you to drink lots of water to avoid dehydration. Bring a water bottle and carry it around with you. A special electrolyte drink is available all over the campsite to help you re-hydrate throughout the day.
The temperature during the day is usually warm, in the high 80s and low 90s°F (28-35°C). In the evenings, the temperaturecools down considerably to low 40s and 50s°F (15-20°C). You will need warm clothes for morning sadhana (daily practice) so we suggest you dress in layers. Sudden rainstorms can occur so be sure to bring rain gear.
Medical Information
We have basic first-aid facilities at the Ram Das Puri Campsite. An emergency hospital is approximately 25 minutes away in Espanola. If you are on medication please make sure you bring an adequate supply with you, and continue with your medication use as prescribed by your doctor.
Medical doctors, chiropractors, and other health professionals are available onsite to provide first aid for acute medical conditions. If you have any special health needs or are taking any medications, please notify the first aid staff when you arrive and they will help you make the necessary arrangements.
Please be certain to bring your proof of proper Medical Insurance or money in case of major medical emergency.
If you have any specific concerns regarding how this activity may affect your health please consult your physician before your program begins. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact our office.
Please Note: Kundalini Yoga is a powerful ancient tradition, but should not be used as a substitute for regular or necessary medical care or prescribed medications.
Accomodations
Accommodations are simple, in keeping with the yogic spirit of the camp. Most attendees bring their own tents and camping gear. Please set up your tent in the designated tenting area and note that tenting is free
of charge.
Hotel: If you are unable to tent due to health or other reasons there are some hotels/inns in Espanola, about 25 minutes from the Ram Das Puri campsite. You can find more info on the Summer Solstice page).

Kundalini Yoga & Sikh Dharma
Yogi Bhajan was not only the Master of Kundalini Yoga, but also held a position of distinction in the Sikh religion. His title was The Siri Singh Sahib and he served as the Chief Administrative Authority for Sikhs in the Western Hemisphere.
The Sikh lifestyle shares elements of the technology of Kundalini Yoga. Sikhs grow their hair, cover their heads, are vegetarians, and do not use any substances such as alcohol or tobacco. As recommended, many wear white clothing, which is a combination of all colors (spin a color wheel and see white)! White enhances the aura and strengthens the magnetic field.
Being in this environment offers participants a chance to experience this aspect of the technology. Because of this, you will see a lot of people wearing turbans and white clothing.

What TO Bring
To make your experience at Solstice more comfortable please bring the following items:
Note: We request that all luggage have the following information: name, phone number, email and home address.

• Lighter clothing for warm days.
• Hat (for both sun and cold) & gloves.
• Rain gear, including an umbrella.
• Sleeping bag, warm bedding and a sleeping pad, as well as blankets suitable for cold temperatures.
• Bathing suit and flip flops or shower shoes.
• Comfortable walking shoes. We recommend warm, water-resistant, over the ankle boots. As we require shoes off in classes and workshops, it is also preferable to have shoes that can slip off and on easily.

• Use items that have only a minimum of disposable packaging.
• Bring washable eating utensils for all members of your family. Do not bring disposable plates and cups.

At Camp
Meals
The Solstice diet is a simple and satisfying yogic vegetarian/vegan diet. Quite a few years ago Yogi Bhajan designed this diet to support the Solstice experience. The spicy soup for breakfast and spicy mung beans & rice served at dinner are part of his recommendations. A nonspicy version of the soup and dinner dish will be available to anyone who can't tolerate the spicy food, although we highly recommend the spices.
Note: If you have special dietary concerns, please contact us to help you come up with solutions. If you are in need on preparing your own food, we suggest choosing the veggie chopping or kitchen Karma Yoga, to better utilize your time.
• Breakfast: For breakfast a potato, celery and onion based soup is served with bananas and oranges on the side. Many people enjoy putting bananas directly into the soup, try it, you might like it.
• Lunch: A vegetarian lunch will be provided.
• Dinner: A special dish made of mung beans, rice and veggies is served with lettuce, steamed carrots, beets and hot sauce served on the side. A very special (and different) meal is served for dinner on the night before camp ends.
• Yogi Tea: Yogi Tea with milk, soy and plain (upon request) will be served twice daily, after Sadhana and nightly at the Yogi Tea Café. There is also hot water and alternative yogi tea options provided all day long. On Tantric Days golden milk will be added to the menu.
Laundry
There will be laundry for one day only on the first day of tantric. It costs $10 per load and will be returned the next day.
• Please put your items in a bag, with your money in an envelope on top of your clothes within the bag (you can get envelopes from the Hospitality Building).
• If your money is not included your laundry will not be washed.
• Be sure to mark your clothes and your laundry bag with your name before coming to camp.
• Many people find it easier to bring enough clothes for the week rather than deal with laundry during the camp, so we recommend you bring a full week’s supply of clothing.
Communications
You can expect to enjoy simplicity and the space to sense your own life while at Solstice.
• Phones: If you must use a cell phone, please use discretion. Please leave cell numbers with Registration to help us locate you in case of emergencies. Reception at the Solstice site is reasonable but not excellent. We request you please turn off your phones during workshops and classes, meditations, and White Tantric Yoga.
Quiet Time
One of our top priorities is allowing everyone who attends to have the opportunity to experience group Sadhana every morning in the Amrit Vela (ambrosial hours; 37 am). All music, evening activities, and the bazaar end by 10 pm, and lights out in the camp is at 11 pm.
Heart to Heart
If you feel the need for extra moral support, you can signup in our Hospitality building for a one on one 20minute heart to heart meeting with an experienced staff member. These are confidential appointments, and are held in a private location.
Leaving the Site
To maintain your meditative experience, please avoid going offsite for phone calls or shopping. If you do need to go offsite, you will need to first obtain a vehicle pass from the Security Office. If you are traveling in someone else’s vehicle you will need to get a pass to leave the Solstice Site with them. Participants under the age of 18 cannot leave unless chaperoned by their parent or legal guardian.
Note: This policy has been created for your safety and so that our team can be aware of who is on or off site in the case of an emergency.
Hydrotherapy
At Ram Das Puri we offer the beautiful technology of hydrotherapy as you enjoy our ONLY cold-water showers during the camp. According to the yogic tradition, massaging yourself under a cold shower helps to build your resistance to colds, flu and hay fever. It gives you strong nerves and will make you glow. Hydrotherapy oxygenates your organs, flushes your capillaries, and releases toxins from your tissues. To take a cold shower, first massage yourself with almond oil, which neutralizes toxins. Then, get under the cold water and massage your body vigorously. Repeat 3 times. Towel dry by rubbing hard and fast. This is the most invigorating way the start your day.

Activities
Karma Yoga
One of the ways we practice mindfulness and celebrate community is through our Karma Yoga (selfless service). No matter our responsibility or position, we all take turns cleaning up after each other and ourselves. This is the grounding basis of contemplative community life, and is an important part of your practice. Karma Yoga not only serves your soul, it helps keep your Solstice tuition lower.
Karma yoga is like whistling while you work. Your personal joy in helping others will grow exponentially.
We are all a part of making the camp run. During Solstice the site is cleaned and maintained through group effort. We play together and we work together.
Your karma family is also your connection to community life. Your group members are your small family within the big family. This is your time to reach out to each other. Please be conscious of your karma family members, making certain that all their needs are being met and your needs will be met in return.
- Karma yoga sign up occurs during registration. If you miss getting an assignment please visit either registration or hospitality.
- All camp attendees are required to participate at least two hours a day.
- Karma groups will meet once a day to connect and plan for the events of the day.

White Tantric Yoga
The White Tantric Yoga Video Course is a powerful meditation practice that clears the subconscious mind, allowing prosperity, success, and happiness to flow freely into your life. It is an ancient and unique yogic science that accelerates your psychological growth by dissolving deeprooted subconscious blocks through the direction of a facilitator and the energy of Yogi Bhajan, the Mahan Tantric.
When Yogi Bhajan created the White Tantric Yoga video series he gave directions to create 40 seminars to be used over the years. There were 130 tapes made over 15 years. He said they were our greatest asset and gave very specific direction that they could still be used after he left his physical body. White Tantric Yoga will continue each year under the guidance of appointed facilitators.

All levels of yoga students can participate in White Tantric Yoga; there are no prerequisites. Beginners will tune into their internal strength and enjoy a deep and sometimes challenging meditative experience. More advanced meditation practitioners will deepen their experience and make new inroads into their spiritual awareness.
All participants are strongly encouraged to wear white cotton clothing. A white cotton head covering is required during the meditations of White Tantric Yoga.
For more information and to learn more about it, visit www.whitetantricyoga.com.
Peace Prayer Day
International Peace Prayer Day is on the first Saturday of the Summer Solstice event and the fee is included in the Solstice tuition. Yogi Bhajan created this annual gathering in 1985 to unite people of all faiths and cultures, and to give them an experience of celebrating peace together. Through the power of prayer, consciousness in action, and commitment to service, we create pathways to peace. Together, we generate positive change in ourselves, in each other, and in the world. For more information: www.peaceprayerday.org.

We do offer a bazaar at Solstice Sadhana for registered participants who would like to sell yogic and healthrelated products and services. Body workers and healers must be licensed by the State of New Mexico.
Sadhana
You are invited to participate in Sadhana or "daily practice". Each morning we begin at 3:45 am with Japji (prayer reading), followed by 45 minutes of Kundalini Yoga, 62 minutes of meditation (to live music) and a short Gurdwara service. Yogi Bhajan gave this specific sadhana as a powerful personal tool during the transition from the Piscean to the Aquarian Age.
Gurdwara (Sikh Devotional Service)
One of the traditions of practicing Sikh Dharma is the Gurdwara service. Gurdwara is a spiritual practice that uses devotional songs and uplifting music called Gurbani Kirtan to connect the individual soul with the Infinite. A short Gurdwara service is held each morning at the end of sadhana. A longer service is held on Sunday morning.
Notice: The organizers of this event expressly reserve the right to refuse admission to anyone.
