Green Yogis Mission
The mission of the Green Yogis is to elevate conscious use of resources at Ram Das Puri and 3HO Internationals events through sustainable seva: Connecting Consciousness to Action.
Objectives
• Implement 3HO International’s short- and long-term goals for sustainability in food, energy, waste management, water and wastewater reuse, climate impact and eco-infrastructure.
• Respond to the needs and desires of the global community.
• Attract new and returning participants by “keeping up” with the conscious movement.
• Educate the global community about sustainable and organic living.
• Involve young people in sustainable living.
• Enable 3HO International to promote itself as a “green” organization.
• Save money through sustainable improvements.
2007 Summer Solstice Achievements
• 50% waste reduction through composting and recycling.
• Cost savings in landfill fees of about $500 by choosing to recycle and compost.
• One less dumpster located at camp. No midweek dumpster pickup.
• Enthusiastic reception of the Green Waste Management program.
• Enthusiastic seva participation in the Green Program.
• Use of last year’s compost as a soil builder for landscaping in Ram Das Puri.
• Use of biodegradable Dr. Bronner’s soap for hand washing throughout camp.
• Testing of biodegradable dish soap and all-purpose cleaner for long-term use in the kitchen.
• Replacement of all throw-away paper products with compostable plates and utensils.
2008 Summer Solstice Goals
• Increase use of organic produce, dairy and fruit, providing consciously grown, organic, farm-direct or fair-trade food, with a focus on organic roots and tomatoes.
• Increase nutritional and organic content of special meals for children and pregnant/nursing mothers.
• Reduce packaging by planning bulk purchase of miscellaneous items.
• Reduce reliance on new resources by using more recycled, compostable products, including biodegradable soaps, cleaning supplies and recycled and recyclable office supplies.
• Replace petrol diesel with biodiesel in the generator and research a long-term alternative renewable energy solution.
• Offset the carbon dioxide footprint of Summer Solstice by financing renewable energy and reforestation projects.
