What is a Woman?
by Yogi Bhajan

Today I am going to talk to you about certain things with which you may agree or disagree. It does not matter. From time immemorial, thousands and hundreds of thousands of people have lived their lives just experimenting with one thing: What is a woman? Do not be surprised. You can meet people who can tell you what is a God, but I would like to know the name of one person who has told you what a woman is...

Message from the 3HO Chief Executive Officer

Sat Nam,

So far this year has been filled with trickery for me. What I thought were new beginnings turned out to be rapid, unexpected endings. Even though I recognize this as infinity, I am mystified.

I like to listen and respond to the Universe by following the signs as they are presented. In doing this sometimes I end up where I expected and other times it takes me deeper into the mystery. When I find myself uncomfortable about being in the mystery and behaving accordingly, I am reminded that security is not found through other people, places or situations in our external lives; our well-being can only truly be found within our relationship to God. So then I work on deepening my connection to this belief.

January brought in a new year; it included the post-40-day cycle of Winter Solstice Sadhana and White Tantric Yoga, and Mercury went into retrograde. February gave us a solar and lunar eclipse, and Mercury moved out of being in retrograde. March brings us the gift of the Spring Equinox on the 20th.

This is a lot of major energy shifts for us to experience in a compacted amount of time; a sign of the times for our not-so-distant future – or perhaps we are already there.

My recent experiences remind me of one of my favorite quotes, which happens to be by Bette Davis: “Better buckle up. It's going to be a bumpy ride.” My reminder: have fun! No matter the challenge or the mystery, stop and have some fun along the way.

Bhajan Kaur
Thank you to all those who have made contact. I am available to everyone and would be grateful to hear from you.

Blessings,
Bhajan Kaur

March 2008 Updates

International Women’s Day: March 8

When Yogi Bhajan arrived in the West, he was appalled that women were called “chicks” —he challenged them to fly fearlessly like eagles. He was shocked that women were embarrassed by being pregnant—he reminded them that they nurtured the child first in the womb. Deeply concerned that women were left alone after birth to fend for themselves, Yogi Bhajan taught the 40 Day Blessing to care for mother and baby with grace and tenderness. He prodded some women to be professionals, others to nurture their families and still others to enter the political realm. With every woman he shared the secret to their long-term success and empowerment: “Woman is a living psyche—vibrating, organic, original. And all she has to remember is to live in the consciousness of ‘I am a woman.’” On International Women’s Day we encourage you to be inspired by Yogi Bhajan’s teachings for women. Please visit the new 3HO Women website and share this wisdom with family and friends.

A Brief History of International Women's Day

International Women’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political. It is an occasion for looking back on past struggles and accomplishments, and more importantly, for looking ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations of women. In 1975, during International Women's Year, the United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day on March 8. Two years later, in December 1977, the General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming a United Nations Day for Women's Rights and International Peace to be observed on any day of the year by Member States, in accordance with their historical and national traditions. In adopting its resolution, the General Assembly recognized the role of women in peace efforts and development and urged an end to discrimination and an increase of support for women’s full and equal participation. Women’s Camp Registration Opens March 7

In 1976 Yogi Bhajan first invited the women of 3HO to gather in New Mexico. He said that to renew themselves, women must get together away from their families, work and pressures of life. He said it is a basic requirement that a woman arranges her life so that she can focus on her own self. To serve this need, he created Women’s Camp, defining it as an environment of challenge and excellence. Here woman can let go of her limiting neurosis and negative self-image and rebuild her own positive caliber. Learn more about Women’s Camp.

Healing the Body, Mind and Soul

The Polarity of the Female

A female swings between two polarities: the woman and the mother. (Let's call it the nurturer.) When she is in the polarity of the woman, she is very direct, alert, and calculating. The shadow side of this can manifest as her being vindictive, without pity, and as sharp as a knife. In the polarity of the mother, she will forgive everything, she will serve and give endlessly. Even if a female is without children, she holds the mother aspect within her.

When a female operates only from her woman aspect with minimum input from her mother energies, her reproductive organs are pressured. In extreme situations, she can develop cysts on her ovaries.

On the other hand, if a female is totally focused on nurturing others and denies her own needs, her reproductive organs can be negatively effected, and can stress her glandular and nervous system. It is essential that the female consciously uses both polaritieswithin herself, and also create harmony between both.

During her life stages, she will call upon the strengths of these two polarities to help balance herself and her life. Sometimes the female swings more to the mother side, sometimes more to the woman side. But in the end, she decides from where to function depending on her situation, her intuition, and her negative, positive and neutral mind.

Recipe

Yogic Food for Women

Almond oil is essential for women. 1 Tbsp of raw, cold-pressed almond oil should be added to your daily routine. It is said to lower cholesterol and cleans the body of toxins. It will keep your skin healthy and shining. Sesame oil, if used the same way, is excellent for a woman’s system.

Bananas and raisins have potassium which help to balance a woman’s mood. A woman should have a banana a day. Try taking 10 raisins every morning and every afternoon (4:00 PM).

Garlic, onions and ginger are three roots which are a very important part of a yogic diet. Called "the trinity roots" in the Kundalini Yoga tradition, they help enhance the yogic practice. Onions are considered a blood cleanser, ginger is excellent for the nervous system, and for digestion garlic is a powerful antibiotic and natural cleanser.

Five peeled almonds a day are another essential item. They keep the impurities from building up in the body. Soak them at night, and the skins will be soft enough to peel in the morning. Almonds should always be eaten peeled except when a woman is menstruating since the skins are a natural astringent.

Rice bran syrup and lecithin are great nutritional supplements. Chili and cayenne aid against depression.

Relaxation is necessary for a good digestion as well as mild activity such as walking to massage the organs of digestion and elimination to keep the system moving. It is also good to take a 10 minute nap after a big meal to allow the body’s energy to focus on digestion.

Digestion begins in the mouth, and Yogi Bhajan has always said that you would not have any digestive trouble if you were to chew each mouthful of food 60 times before swallowing. Emphasis is placed on how the food is ingested as well. Sitting and focusing your energy while you eat instead of grabbing your food on the run will aid your digestive process.

Yogis believe in eating “Satvic” foods which are nonstimulating foods: simple, pure, and whole. Avoid processed foods and chemical additives, preservatives or dyes. Foods that clear the system within 18 hours are ideal for women. Meat stays in the digestive tract too long and can begin to rot. This can create an environment for colon cancer. It's not what you eat, but how you digest and eliminate food.

Kundalini Yoga

Developing a Meditative Mind

Sit on your heels in Vajrasana (Rock Pose) with a straight spine. Press the palms of your hands together in Prayer Mudra. The thumbs are not crossed. Raise your arms up over your head, elbows straight. Stretch up from your shoulder blades. The arms hug the ears tightly with fifiteen pounds of pressure. The eyes are nine-tenths closed.

This meditation is just three breaths of one minute each. You may use any mantra you wish with this meidtation. There is no rest period between the breaths. Do not do more than three breaths.

Inhale and hold the breath for sixty seconds. The sixty seconds includes the inhalation time. Exhale completely. Then repeat the sixty second breath two more times. Relax.
