Sat Nam One and All,
In the Appalachian Mountain city of Asheville, North Carolina, teachers and practitioners of Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan have come
together to form the collective, "Asheville Kundalini Yoga."
In 2010, a group of local teachers came together around the idea of organizing a local Spring gathering to celebrate the unifying nature of Yogi Bhajan's teachings, music, food and the power of group meditation and Kundalini Yoga. Since then it has blossomed into an annual event with teachers from six states. This year's special guest musician, Jai Jagdeesh, joined us from California.
In 2011, Asheville was blessed to hold its first Level 1 Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training with Pritpal Kaur and Pritpal Singh Khalsa of Espanola, NM. We also hosted the SuperHealth Introductory training with Mukta Kaur Khalsa, also from Espanola. Both were a success and, happily, our community gained six new certified Kundalini Yoga teachers.
This April we have the great fortune to welcome back Mukta Kaur and her SuperHealth Enhancement course. And on May 18-20 we will hold our community-wide annual gathering, "Sacred Current." Later this year, in October, we look forward to the arrival of Y.O.G.A. for Youth teacher training, with Krishna Kaur.
Some community classes include a weekly class at the local YWCA taught by Nav Jiwan Kaur, and Sat Shabad Kaur’s Kundalini Yoga class in association with the Women's Well Being and Development Foundation, offering education for the empowerment of women and girls of low income. Recently, Sierra Hollister initiated a forty-day community meditation and, for the last three years, Siri Beant Singh has been leading monthly group sadhana in the amrit vela. Offering nearly twenty Kundalini Yoga classes each week with twelve teachers around town, folks who are local or just passing through have a wide selection of locations and hours to choose from.
In addition, local, upcoming, and ongoing workshops include an 8 week "Chakras Workshop," "Bound Lotus" class, a weekly Bhangra class, the new "Refine Your I for Art" with Kundalini Yoga, Chaitana kirtan, Sat Nam Rasayan, and the Kundalini Crop Circles pilgrimage to England with Siri Karta Kaur.
Lastly, our monthly potlucks and the annual camp out (in July this year) serve to bring our community closer together, with Kundalini Yoga and
meditation, hiking, soaking in hot springs, delicious, wholesome vegetarian meals, and socializing over lots of Yogi Tea.
Teachers, weekly classes and events can all be viewed in greater detail on our community website: ashevillekundaliniyoga.com or on the Asheville Kundalini Yoga facebook page. Also an article featuring "Sacred Current" will be appearing in the May 2012 edition of Natural Awakenings Magazine.
With open hearts,
Narayan Singh Khalsa and the Asheville Kundalini Yoga Community
