“There’s no other way on the planet to free your soul unto the destiny and unto God but by serving those who need a hand—smiling at them, wiping away their tears, forgiving them.”
Seva, or selfless service, is the most selfish act that you can practice on the planet. To serve another person selflessly is very selfish in that it lifts you up into a higher vibration that makes you feel good about life, others and yourself.
Seva is the magic pill to pull you out of your own neurosis, fears, doubts and worries. Seva is like a much welcomed vacation from the limited ego that expands you into your greater GOD SELF.
If you are feeling under a blanket of negativity, obsessing about your problems and saying to yourself, “How can I help anyone—look how screwed up I am!” The most efficient way out of this state of consciousness is to find someone that has the same problem as you and help them!
If you look around the world, there is no dearth of people who need a helping hand. We all have something to give even if it is just a smile, a kind word, or your undivided attention.
There is a longing inside each one of us to help other people. It is our natural state to give in this way. However, in the Piscean Age, the illness of the ego has taken us from our natural centre. The ego is all about the bargain—I do this for you and then you do this for me. I will lend you money and you pay me back with interest. I will give you my time and energy and you give me money in return. Seva takes you away from this ego bargain that permeates the world and puts you into an expanded state of consciousness.
My first real profound experience of seva took place in 2004 at Yogi Bhajan's Memorial Service in British Columbia, Canada. I was in charge of foot washing as people entered the Gurdwara. I felt out of my comfort zone and a little grumpy because I didn't sleep well the night before. To be honest, this job was a stretch for me as a westerner and my ego was in full on resistance.
However, as I surrendered to the task, my grumpiness disappeared and I reached a state of consciousness where I was actually enjoying it. After each foot wash, I aspired to give a better foot wash next time—as if I could do this all day, every day, for eternity. Then my perspective started to radically shift. At one point, I saw everyone coming to me as a majestic Saint—each one was so beautiful and radiant. It truly felt like I was in the presence of royalty.
And then I began to see them looking at me with so much love, respect and honor—like it was really me that was the Saint! Then everything merged into ONE and I could no longer tell who was serving and who was receiving. This was my first real experience that it is the ONE SELF that serves itself. The SELF longs to see itself reflected in the SELF of the other.
Any impulse we have to serve is really coming from this SELF that lives in each one of us. Listen to this impulse, this call of your Higher Self to serve—you won't regret it.
