Covering the Head

Covering the Head

You may have noticed many Kundalini Yoga teachers and students wear head coverings. While it isn’t required, there are many good reasons to cover the head during practice.

Why do Yogis Cover their Head?

Head coverings help focus the functional circuit of the hemispheres of the brain, and tune the neurological system. On an energetic level, they help the practitioner command the third eye, and to contain and focus the powerful energies of Kundalini Yoga.

This head covering might be a cotton cloth or other natural non-static fabric or a wrapped turban. White, as the preferred color of Kundalini clothing, is the combination of all colors of the electromagnetic spectrum, and enhances the magnetic field and the strength of the aura.

The Function of Head Coverings

Head coverings help to contain energy and to keep the focus at the Third Eye (Ajna chakra) while a person is practicing yoga or doing work that requires concentration or clarity of thought. They literally help “keep your head together.”

The turban especially, with its 5-7 layers of cloth, brings support and stability to the constant cranial movement of the many bones of the skull. In addition, the turban provides a nice cranial adjustment. Some teachers wear a turban or head covering for these yogic reasons alone.

Head coverings can also reduce anxiety and bring a calming effect to yoga practice. They act to hold the hair up and to cover the hair, which aids in the harmonizing of the energy flow between the Root Chakra (Muladhara) and the Crown Chakra (Sahasrara).

The hair is alive and helps to regulate the inflow of sun energy into the body. The Kundalini energy is activated by the radiant force of the solar plexus and moves upward in response to the descending solar energy. The head covering supports the electrical balancing of this body energy.

Try wearing a head covering next time you practice and notice how you feel!
