In the arc of human existence, we have only recently begun to understand the subconscious and unconscious minds and how they work, primarily within the last century. Thank you, Doctors Freud and Jung. Experiencing, understanding, and mastering these facets of ourselves are important to the process of human evolution; I think of that old saying that “The way out is through.” However, for the last few decades and increasingly since the Uranus-Pluto conjunctions in the 1960s, it appears that humanity has been basking in and glorifying intense emotions and we’ve felt freer to explore and express them “at” each other whenever and wherever we want.
This includes darker intentions, when some people think they can get away with subversive plans and maneuverings because others don’t know what’s happening if they can’t see it. And, in fact, people often seem to care less and less whether their actions and maneuverings are clearly visible to others—this is the dark side of feeling that we have the right as individuals to have and create whatever we want (dark Uranus).
We seem to have opened up a Pandora’s Box of subconscious content and habits, giving free reign to emotions and thought patterns and fears that are extensions of animal, limbic brain reactions to things around us (dark Pluto). Observing current pop culture (witness the chaos and insanity that is a lot of “reality TV” these days), it often feels as though Descartes’ principle “I think, therefore I am,” has warped into, “I feel intensely and love drama; therefore I am ALIVE and thriving, and the center of my own life!”
In its roughly 30-year cycle through the signs of the zodiac, Saturn enters the sign of Scorpio on October 5th, 2012, where it will be for a little over two years. This planetary dance is asking us, among other things, to take responsibility for intense emotions, for how we manage subconscious content rising up, and for how we dance with the energies flowing between us and others. It asks us to turn down the volume on internal, interpersonal and collective drama, and to do something about what we’re feeling and experiencing. And that “something” that we do about it should not fall into the category of childish reactions, blaming, and pushing the responsibility outside of ourselves. Saturn is a hard task-master. Yet when we embrace Saturn and do the hard work in front of us, we feel pretty good, proud of ourselves, fulfilled to have accomplished something worthwhile and lasting.
During the next two years, Saturn’s passage through Scorpio also ties into the current three-year period of exact Uranus-Pluto squares. For the next two years, Saturn and Pluto are in each other’s natural signs: Saturn in Scorpio, Pluto in Capricorn. This intensifies the circuitry of energy flowing back and forth between these two planets, and what they’re stimulating within us. One of the highest ways to work with this combination, within the context of personal and human evolution: Pluto churns up the deep, subconscious patterns crystallized within us, and we apply conscious, Saturnian effort and action to clear those things.
Both planets are pushing us to rise up and change things. Uranus in the mix pushes us to no longer sit back and go along with things, but to get “sick and tired of being sick and tired.” It’s time to buckle down, take an honest look within ourselves and within our social structures, and to seriously do something about the issues we find.
One other quick and critical note in the theme of taking responsibility to be actively involved in what effects us: Mercury goes retrograde three times every year. For its third and final time this year, Mercury turns retrograde on Tuesday, November 6th, Election Day in the United States. (This also occurred in 2000 when the votes had to be recounted. It took a while for a presidential winner to be declared, and many were suspicious that their vote had not been counted.) It is characteristic of Mercury retrograde to wish you could go back and do something differently than you did, or to find SNAFUS that need to be fixed. But with elections, there isn’t usually a “do over.”
With the seven Uranus-Pluto squares over the next three years, there’s no magic solution to fix the problems we face nationally and globally. We have to evolve our way through it all, and that is only done with conscious effort and awareness. The themes of these three years of Uranus-Pluto squares include democracy, fair representation, and taking an active role in the way our lives play out in the social structure and larger context. Saturn demands we step up as mature, conscious adults and citizens, and participate in what is happening. Never has it been more important to make our voices count.
Suggestion for the month (and the next two years): Observe and consider what’s happening in both the big picture and the details of your life, as well as in the social structures around you. Take conscious action to form and transform your life, and to participate in the processes of forming and transforming collective social reality. Personally: choose a meditation that gets at transforming some internal thing you keep stumbling against within yourself. Socially: research, observe and get ready to VOTE!
